How to Download Your Raw DNA Data
Step-by-step instructions for downloading your raw genetic data file from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, and other services.
To use ReadMe DNA, you need the raw data file from your DNA testing service. Here's how to download it.
From 23andMe
- Log in to your 23andMe account at 23andme.com
- Click your name in the top-right corner
- Select "Settings" from the dropdown
- Scroll down to "23andMe Data" section
- Click "Download Raw Data"
- Enter your password when prompted
- Click "Submit Request"
- Check your email for the download link (usually arrives within 30 minutes)
- Download the .zip or .txt file
The file will be approximately 15-25 MB and contains your genotype data for ~600,000+ SNPs.
From AncestryDNA
- Log in to your Ancestry account at ancestry.com
- Click "DNA" in the top navigation
- Click "Settings" (gear icon)
- Scroll to "Download Raw DNA Data"
- Click "Download" and confirm
- Enter your password
- Check your email for the download link
- Download the .zip or .txt file
AncestryDNA files are similar in size and format to 23andMe files.
From MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, and Others

Privacy and Security
Your raw data file contains your genetic information. Keep it secure:
- ReadMe DNA never stores your raw data. We process it in memory and discard it after generating your report.
- Don't share your raw data file publicly. It contains sensitive genetic information.
- Store your downloaded file securely if you want to keep it for future use.
